Telegram’s History
Telegram was launched in 2013 by brothers Nikolai Durov and Pavel Durov. Earlier, the couple founded the Russian social network VK. They broke up in 2014 after having problems with allies of President Putin. Pavel Durov sold his remaining stake in VK and left Russia after resisting government pressure. According to Telegram, the company is a non-profit organization, although its ultimate goal is not to make a profit.
Channels
In September 2015, Telegram channels were added. Channels are a form of one-way messaging in which administrators can write messages, but other users cannot send them. Any user can create and subscribe to channels. Channels can be created to broadcast messages to an unlimited number of subscribers.

Channels can be public with a nickname and a permanent URL for everyone to join. Users who join a channel can see the entire message history. Users can join and leave channels at any time. Depending on a channel’s settings, message signatures are either the channel’s name or the admin’s username. Users who are not administrators cannot see other users who subscribe to the channel. Since each message has its own display counter, which shows how many users have seen this message, including the views of the transmitted messages, the channel’s administrator can view statistics on channel activity. Starting in May 2019, the person who created a channel can add a discussion group, a separate group. Messages on the channel are automatically sent for subscribers to communicate. This allows him to comment on posts in the channel.
In December 2019, Bloomberg moved its messenger-based newsletter service from WhatsApp to Telegram following previously banned bulk and automated messaging.
